Captain Hildreth

Chief of Staff, Carrier Strike Group 5

Captain Nelson P. Hildreth, a native of Colchester, Vermont, is a 1987 Naval ROTC graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering. He also received a Masters in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University in 2010. He currently serves as the Chief of Staff to Commander, Battle Force SEVENTH Fleet/Task Force SEVEN ZERO/Carrier Strike Group FIVE.

Designated a submarine officer in 1987, Hildreth’s early sea tours include a tour as a Division Officer aboard USS PARGO (SSN 650), as the Engineering Officer aboard USS PUFFER (SSN 652), as the Navigation and Operations Officer aboard USS HONOLULU (SSN 718), and as the Executive Officer aboard USS MIAMI (SSN 755). Following his Executive Officer tour, Hildreth served as the Officer in Charge of Moored Training Ship 626 (DANIEL WEBSTER) at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in Charleston, South Carolina.

Hildreth’s shore assignments include serving as the Operations Officer on the staff of Submarine Squadron TWO in Groton, Connecticut and as the Year 2000 Transition Project Officer on the staff of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Hildreth commanded USS LA JOLLA (SSN 701) from October 2005 to October 2007. During his tour, LA JOLLA completed a Western Pacific deployment and was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation for actions during her deployment. LA JOLLA was also twice awarded the Battle Efficiency “E” during his tour. After his command tour, he served as the Deputy Senior Member of the Pacific Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examination Board and as the Director of Plans on the staff of Commander, Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa.

Hildreth’s last assignment was as Commanding Officer, USS FRANK CABLE (AS 40) from June, 2011 to January, 2014, deployed to Guam, USA. During his tenure, FRANK CABLE was award the Battle Efficiency “E” and completed a dry docking availability in Portland, Oregon.

Hildreth's personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various service and campaign awards.
